From the Jerusalem Post:
- Following intense US pressure, the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday issued an unprecedented condemnation of Monday’s Hizbullah attacks on northern Israel. This condemnation – slamming Hizbullah by name for “acts of hatred” – marked the first time the Security Council has ever reprimanded Hizbullah for cross-border attacks on Israel.
- The condemnation expressed “deep concern” over the attack, and called on Lebanon to exercise its sovereignty and authority in the south according to relevant Security Council resolutions . . . Israeli officials expressed satisfaction that the statement did not include any attempt to “balance it,” referring to Israel’s response to the Hizbullah attack, and that for the first time ever it placed full responsibility for the violence on Hizbullah’s shoulders.
- When asked what changed from Monday to Wednesday, one diplomatic official replied: “John Bolton,” a reference to the US ambassador to the UN. Bolton lobbied vigorously for the passage of the statement.
Good news, for a change.
Certainly John Bolton is something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. I’m also thankful for your blog’s appearance in my life, Marc, because it has enriched my intellectual world. Happy Thanksgiving.
Bookworm,
Thanks for your kind words and the happiest of Thanksgivings to you. It took us a long time to meet in the blogoshere, but in this case it’s truly better late than never. There are some good things happening in the world—in the UN, of all places. And if good things can happen there, who knows?
When I started blogging 14 months ago, I had no idea that there were so many thoughtful people who could put their ideas on (cyber)paper—yourself among them.
It will be a long, hard struggle, but America will prevail over its enemies, and we will prevail over America’s detractors. What reassures me the most is the people voting with their feet: they’re coming here, not leaving here. That’s been our story and it still is.
The futures so bright, we gotta wear shades.
What excellent work by Mr. Bolton. I was afraid for a while he wasn’t going to make it to New York. Clearly, it’s good that he did. Hizballah is a very important focal point for the war on totalitarianism and terror—maybe the most important today.
I had missed this event and am delighted to see it here. I have found it truly bizarre that the UN & the EU has refused to name Hizballah as a terrorist organization. It would appear that Ambassador Bolton is at last bringing common sense to an arena that desperately needs it.
This news is Beautiful
Thank you for posting this…
