A cheer for Senator Clinton. From the New York Times:
- . . . yesterday morning Mrs. Clinton rolled out a new response to those demanding contrition: She said she was willing to lose support from voters rather than make an apology she did not believe in.
“If the most important thing to any of you is choosing someone who did not cast that vote or has said his vote was a mistake, then there are others to choose from.â€
This post isn’t an endorsement of her candidancy. But she’s moved up a notch or two in my estimation. Having taken this stance, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to reverse her stance. Even for a Clinton.
She seems to embody a lot of the American electorate who initially supported the war, but whose support has since evaporated. She wins on all fronts: she remains attractive to security voters because she voted for a war that she thought was in America’s best interest at the time, and she is also prepared to recognize the failures of the war and can present herself as someone with a plan to get America out again. She may yet prevent herself from being associated with the “mushy” left wing of the Democrats. However, despite her strengths on this and other issues, the American public can still find lots of reasons not to vote for her.
Have we not learned from history? Of the repeated artful dodging, constant political positioning, and the absence of any core principles from the Clintons? The Clintons have no other focus than the achievement of power and they will say anything to attain public office. We are simply fools to believe anything these people say. They are unserious people for serious times.
