[Updated with reactions from left-wing bloggers (see below) and this from the New York Times, which seems not to share their opinions:“Dramatic license was certainly taken, but blame is spread pretty evenly across the board.”]
Democratic Leader Harry Reid, Assistant Democratic Leader Dick Durbin, and Senators Debbie Stabenow, Charles Schumer, and Byron Dorgan have sent a letter to Robert Iger, the President and CEO of The Walt Disney Company (ABC’s parent company). The letter threatens to revoke ABC’s broadcast license if the contents of “The Path to 9/11” aren’t altered. I’ve already made my views known about the Democrats’ effort at censorship, so there’s no need to repeat them here.
This is the full text of the letter:
Dear Mr. Iger,We write with serious concerns about the planned upcoming broadcast of “The Path to 9/11” mini-series on Sept. 10 and 11. Countless reports from experts on 9/11 who have viewed the program indicate numerous and serious inaccuracies that will undoubtedly serve to misinform the American people about the tragic events surrounding the terrible attacks of that day. Furthermore, the manner in which this program has been developed, funded, and advertised suggests a partisan bent unbecoming of a major company like Disney and a major and well-respected news organization like ABC. We therefore urge you to cancel this broadcast to cease Disney’s plans to use it as a teaching tool in schools across America through Scholastic. Presenting such deeply flawed and factually inaccurate misinformation to the American public and to children would be a gross miscarriage of your corporate and civic responsibility to the law, to your shareholders, and to the nation.
The Communications Act of 1934 provides your network with a free broadcast license predicated on the fundamental understanding of your principle obligation to act as a trustee of the public airwaves in serving the public interest. Nowhere is this public interest obligation more apparent than in the duty of broadcasters to serve the civic needs of a democracy by promoting an open and accurate discussion of political ideas and events.
Disney and ABC claim this program to be based on the 9/11 Commission Report and are using that assertion as part of the promotional campaign for it. The 9/11 Commission is the most respected American authority on the 9/11 attacks, and association with it carries a special responsibility. Indeed, the very events themselves on 9/11, so tragic as they were, demand extreme care by any who attempt to use those events as part of an entertainment or educational program. To quote Steve McPhereson, president of ABC Entertainment, “When you take on the responsibility of telling the story behind such an important event, it is absolutely critical that you get it right.”
Unfortunately, it appears Disney and ABC got it totally wrong.
Despite claims by your network’s representatives that “The Path to 9/11” is based on the report of the 9/11 Commission, 9/11 Commissioners themselves, as well as other experts on the issues, disagree.
—Richard Ben-Veniste, speaking for himself and fellow 9/11 Commissioners who recently viewed the program, said, “As we were watching, we were trying to think how they could have misinterpreted the 9/11 Commission’s findings the way that they had.” (“9/11 Miniseries Is Criticized as Inaccurate and Biased,” New York Times, September 6, 2006)
—Richard Clarke, the former counter-terrorism czar, and a national security advisor to ABC has described the program as “deeply flawed” and said of the program’s depiction of a Clinton official hanging up on an intelligence agent, “It’s 180 degrees from what happened.” (“9/11 Miniseries Is Criticized as Inaccurate and Biased,” New York Times, September 6, 2006)
—Reports suggest that an FBI agent who worked on 9/11 and served as a consultant to ABC on this program quit halfway through because, “he thought they were making things up.” (MSNBC, September 7, 2006)
—Even Thomas Kean, who serves as a paid consultant to the miniseries, has admitted that scenes in the film are fictionalized. (“9/11 Miniseries Is Criticized as Inaccurate and Biased,” New York Times, September 6, 2006)That Disney would seek to broadcast an admittedly and proven false recounting of the events of 9/11 raises serious questions about the motivations of its creators and those who approved the deeply flawed program. Finally, that Disney plans to air commercial-free a program that reportedly cost it $40 million to produce serves to add fuel to these concerns.
These concerns are made all the more pressing by the political leaning of and the public statements made by the writer/producer of this miniseries, Mr. Cyrus Nowrasteh, in promoting this miniseries across conservative blogs and talk shows.
Frankly, that ABC and Disney would consider airing a program that could be construed as right-wing political propaganda on such a grave and important event involving the security of our nation is a discredit both to the Disney brand and to the legacy of honesty built at ABC by honorable individuals from David Brinkley to Peter Jennings. Furthermore, that Disney would seek to use Scholastic to promote this misguided programming to American children as a substitute for factual information is a disgrace.
As 9/11 Commission member Jamie Gorelick said, “It is critically important to the safety of our nation that our citizens, and particularly our school children, understand what actually happened and why – so that we can proceed from a common understanding of what went wrong and act with unity to make our country safer.”
Should Disney allow this programming to proceed as planned, the factual record, millions of viewers, countless schoolchildren, and the reputation of Disney as a corporation worthy of the trust of the American people and the United States Congress will be deeply damaged. We urge you, after full consideration of the facts, to uphold your responsibilities as a respected member of American society and as a beneficiary of the free use of the public airwaves to cancel this factually inaccurate and deeply misguided program. We look forward to hearing back from you soon.
Sincerely,
Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid
Assistant Democratic Leader Dick Durbin
Senator Debbie Stabenow
Senator Charles Schumer
Senator Byron Dorgan
The Los Angeles Times reports that ABC has in recent days made changes to the film and the Center for American Progress Action Fund has launched a letter-writing campaign urging the network to “correct” or dump the miniseries. Additionally, the newspaper adds that ABC is “tip-toeing” away from the film’s version of events. In a statement, the network said the miniseries
is a dramatization, not a documentary, drawn from a variety of sources, including the 9/11 commission report, other published materials and from personal interviews . . . The events that lead to 9/11 originally sparked great debate, so it’s not surprising that a movie surrounding those events has revived the debate. The attacks were a pivotal moment in our history that should never be forgotten and it’s fitting that the discussion continues.
On its website’s home page, the Action Fund says:
ABC television is planning to run an inaccurate film depicting the events leading up to the 9/11 attacks. The film was written by an avowed conservative and it largely places the blame for failing to prevent the attacks on the Clinton administration while whitewashing the failures of the Bush administration. Our review of the film shows it to be full of such inaccuracies. Its distorted version of history is inconsistent with the 9/11 Commission Report, upon which it claims to be based. The events leading up to September 11, 2001 are too important and too tragic to play politics with the facts.
UPDATE: Not a single one of these left-wing bloggers is the least bit concerned about censorship. None of them even make mention of it. In the name of civil liberties, they all want to restrict the government’s power to combat terrorism. But when it comes to using governmental power to prevent an “inaccurate” portrayal of the events leading to 9/11, civil liberties take a back seat. If anything has revealed the hypocrisy of the left, this is it.
- Daily Kos: “this corruption of the public airwaves by Mr. Rove and the Disney Corporation is further evidence, that our Republic has embarked even further on that very dangerous path which leads to a totalitarianism. Indeed, not merely a totalitarian state, but a society and a nation ruled by fascists and their corporate cronies.”
- Shakespeare’s Sister: “Disney is deliberately interfering with elections, and if they air this steaming heap of shit, their broadcast license should be immediately revoked.”
- The Left Coaster: “Disney and ABC are GOP propaganda outlets. Every time you buy something that is Disney or visit one of their theme parks, you are contributing to the GOP. Every time you watch an ABC show, you are helping the GOP.”
- Crooks and Liars: “It’s difficult to know what’s in the film since they only sent it to right wingers. I wonder why they refuse to let us see it?”
- Think Progress: “Write ABC and tell them to tell the truth about 9/11.
- Media Matters: “Media conservatives leap to lockstep defense of ABC’s 9-11 ‘docudrama.”
- Firedoglake: “why did [Iger] blast copies to right wing bloggers? Is it because he knew they’re such a bunch of trained monkeys they’d never speak out against the official Bush Whitewash of History Canon? Authoritarian cultists really do make the best critics.”
- Neeedlenose: “now is the perfect time to
give ABC hellexpress our thoughtful opinions in order to make sure factual inaccuracies are corrected or avoided.” - Taylor Marsh: “According to ABC, aka GOP-TV, they are portraying the ‘essence of truth’.
- TalkLeft: “It is pure Republican propoganda and packed with lies, aimed at influencing the upcoming November elections.”
- No Quarter: “Rove’s machine is in full gear for November.”
Of course, the fascist Bush Administration called today for ABC to alter or dump The Path to 9/11 or face the consequences up to and including the pulling of the network licensing…censorship at it’s finest. Heil Bush…
Oh wait, it’s not Bush censoring the freedom of the press? It’s not Rummy putting pressure on Mickey? Cheney is not the one at the door? Crud, my whole world is collapsing- Sign Me ~Dimocratic Underworld poster…
[...] Via American Future: Democratic Leader Harry Reid, Assistant Democratic Leader Dick Durbin, and Senators Debbie Stabenow, Charles Schumer, and Byron Dorgan have sent a letter to Robert Iger, the President and CEO of The Walt Disney Company (ABC’s parent company). The letter threatens to revoke ABC’s broadcast license if the contents of “The Path to 9/11″ aren’t altered. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t recall any Democrats—or, more to the point, Republicans—demanding that Michael Moore fix the inaccuracies in Fahrenheit 9/11 before its release. What I do remember is a large group of congressional Democrats attending its Washington opening and commenting favorably on it. I also recall the inaccurate Mr. Moore being given a place of honor by being seated next to Jimmy Carter at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. Inaccuracies that favor their side evidently don’t bother them. [...]
ABC: All for Bill Clinton
Actually though, if it is inaccurate, and I have no way of knowing, I’m all for them making it as accurate as can be expected. Still, as noted, their voices certainly were contrary to any concerns for veracity when it came to Farenheit 9/11.
Or, for that matter, when it came to PlameGate.
I reckon the only thing to conclude is the Dems have reformed, and have a new found regard for truth. Yep, that’s what it is.
(And go Blake, take it to the 4th set.)
The next time the Lefties try to block anti-terrorism initiatives in the name of civil liberties, shove them this in their faces. The mask has fallen off: they, like the Muslims (surprise, surprise!), care for civil liberties only when they suit their needs.
Amazing, simply amazing, to look over the years and see how the American Left has squandered all its credits from the Roosevelt and Truman days one by one. Into the trashcan of history we go, boys.
With just a little bit of foresight, ABC could have preempted all this by writing a scene in which Bin Laden’s Wife #3, played by Janet Jackson, has a wardrobe malfunction just as the US strike against Osama is called off by Bill Clinton.
When some radio stations refused to play the Dixie Chicks music after they made some anti-Pres Bush statements, the station executives were hauled before the U.S. Congress and asked to explain why they were exercising censorship.
Of course, that was absurd. Only the government can impose censorship. Most radio stations do not play the Dixie Chicks because they simply don’t play that kind of music. That is not censorship; that is a Ford dealer not chosing to sell Chevys.
Threatening to pull a broadcast license because of the political aspects of a program is indeed censorship. We don’t need Congressional hearings this time; we need arrest warrents for those politicans making the threats.
I plan to buy a copy of the film United 93 soon. I understand that in that movie there is a scene where government officials refuse to give the order to shoot down the hijacked airliners. That is inaccurate; Vice Pres Cheny gave that order and an F-16 was closing in Flt 93 when it went into the ground. Of course, depicting that aspect would diminish the drama presented in the film. Inaccuracies are common in historical docudramas. What is important is conveying the overall truth – and the truth is that the Clinton Admin was soft on terrorism.

Clinton And 9-11(Investor’s Business Daily)
Based on the 9-11 commission report and ABC News correspondent John Miller’s book, “The Cell,” the film strips away the conventional wisdom that somehow the fledgling Bush White House was responsible for 9-11 through neglect or indifference.
The film strips bare the Democratic talking points, exposing them for the fraud they are, accurately depicting the chances the Clinton White House missed to kill or capture bin Laden and the barriers they put up to connecting all the information.
It was the Clinton administration that could have put Osama bin Laden out of commission.
It was under Clinton that Americans were killed by terrorists on three continents without a meaningful response.
It was under Bill Clinton that we left Somalia in disgrace after dead Americans were dragged through the streets, giving bin Laden all the proof of our lack of will he needed.
And it was Clinton’s deputy attorney general, Jamie Gorelick, who created the wall of separation between the FBI and CIA that kept us from connecting the information and preventing 9-11.
What’s the word that describes all this? Ah, yes, incompetence. One wonders if our Democratic leadership(present or past) is clammering for some face-time with Khatami? They’d certainly appear to get along and have quite a bit in common.
‘Freedom of speech for me but not for thee’ - the 06’ Democratic platform(don’t dare to question their patriotism!)
ABC should show the movie, display blank screens that were cut out, then release the cuts on the Internet. Since the cuts are junk anyway. In the Internet release, they should state in the beginning and at the end that the audience should realize that like every movie, the scenes were a writer’s conjectures because he wasn’t there.
Clinton’s Bin Laden Policy ‘Was Doomed to Fail”...

Guess you all forgot about that Reagan movie huh? Well, the fact that it wasn’t allowed to air because of “factual inaccuries” could be a good reason.
Pardon me, inaccuracies. What can I say? It’s 6 AM here.
