In “The Firestorn Over My Column,” Washington Post ombudsman Deborah Howell says she was unprepared for the thousands of “flaming” emails she got last week over her last column, emails that were “so abusive” and many “so obscene” that part of The Post’s Web site was shut down.
In that column, she praised The Post for breaking the story on lobbyist Jack Abramoff’s dealings. The column pointed out that Abramoff is a Republican and dealt mainly with Republicans. But Howell made a mistake. She wrote that he gave campaign money to both parties and their members of Congress. He didn’t. Instead, he directed his client Indian tribes to make campaign contributions to members of Congress from both parties.
To some of us, this is a small difference. But not to the Angry Left. She was told that she was a “right-wing whore,” that she was lying, that Democrats never got a penny of Abramoff-tainted money, and that she was trying to say it was a bipartisan scandal.
Here’s three “printable” emails that Howell received:
Yes, the WAPO needs an enema, and Howell should be the first thing that gets medicinally removed.
You Deborah Howell, stop lying about Democrats getting money from Abramoff. Democrats do not control anything in Washington, so why would he waste money bribing them. Think and do your research, and stop being an idiot.
This rag must be something that I pulled off a barscreen at a sewage treatment plant. Howell is simply a paid liar. How this creature endures itself is something I don’t understand. What a piece of flotsam.
I can only imagine what the unprintable emails must be like.
The Angry Left must have a lot of energy: at the same time that its members are lambasting Howell, they’re up in arms over Chris Matthews’ drawing attention to the similarities in Michael Moore’s and Bin Laden’s rhetoric.
The Angry Left plays the same role in all leftist movements, that of the useful idiots as Lenin called them. They are the shock troops that provide the movement with passion and energy. The trouble is that they are very hard to satisfy. They’re what has France stuck in the past for so long. Fortunately, their portion of the electorate isn’t anywhere as large in this country as they are in poor France. Once the more moderate leftists and centrists in the Democratic Party realize that the baggage of the Angry Left is not worth their small electoral numbers the party will either split or reposition itself much closer to the center. The Angry Left will be just that, angry and left, and then they’ll realize just how marginal they really are.
There is an air of desperation here. The leftist worldview is collapsing. With Merkel’s Germany, the approaching change of government in Canada, France in flames, and Blair’s betrayal over Iraq, there are few real-life models of leftist triumph to take comfort in. They are being challenged in their previously impregnable bastions of academia and media. Hollywood is holding firm, tho.
Those they look towards for leadership are either embarrassing, outdated or triangulating. And now, even a nuclear Iran scares them to the point that they actually want the UN to be effective. They want to live in the world where terrorists don’t kidnap and kill peace activists and Africans turn to well-intended NGO’s not Chinese capitalists to pull them out proverty. Unfortunately for them, the world is not cooperating. Give them a break, they’re going through a rough time.
Of course bin Laden is reading the American Left’s playbook, he is not a stupid man. I just can’t believe thehypocrisy from the left in forming their argument that this is slanderous to Michael Moore. What about the invective and slander hurled at the President by the same folks defending Moore? Try these Google searches:
Bush Hitler (6,920,000 returns)
Bush murderer (1,690,000 returns)
Bush Gulag (890,000 returns)
Note that I am not saying that I think Moore supports bin Laden, I think Moore a fool, not a terrorist- unfortunately he iand his ilk are useful fools when it comes to al-Qaeda.
